Ecotherapy
Ecotherapy
As a trauma therapist, my specialized background in Somatic Psychotherapy and Ecotherapy blends seamlessly and effectively. Moreover, nature profoundly grounds individuals, enabling them to more readily access their innate, built-in instincts for healing.
Consequently, ecotherapy harnesses powerful regenerative effects, actively improving mood while simultaneously easing symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression.
For instance, Stephen Mather, a prominent American industrialist, served as a driving force behind the creation of the national park system. Although he frequently suffered from debilitating spells of depression and mental collapse that necessitated hospitalization, he ultimately discovered the profound quiet and rejuvenation he desperately needed in nature. Therefore, his personal experiences underscored the therapeutic potential of natural environments.
In reference to the National Parks…
They are our antidote for national restlessness. They are national character and health builders. They are giving a new impetus to sane living in this country.
Adventure Therapy in the Grand Canyon
In conjunction with the Wolakota Youth Program, our team actively guided eight at-risk teens through a transformative week-long cultural immersion on the Havasupai Reservation, deep within the Grand Canyon.
Moreover, a fundamental aspect of this program deliberately provided meaningful opportunities for the teens to “pay it forward,” as their personal healing naturally evolved into a powerful pathway for outreach and service to others.
In addition to focusing on their own growth and self-work, the participants forged positive, lasting relationships and created cherished memories with Native youth and community members.
Furthermore, they faced constant physical and mental challenges throughout the experience, which consistently pushed them to discover and embody their best possible selves.
My trip to the Grand Canyon was life-changing… ever since I came back from the trip it has been much easier to take control of the thoughts in my mind, heart and soul. For anyone considering this for a family member, friend or even possibly yourself, I highly recommend it.
A Family Camp for Disabilities
Faced with significant impairment from post-concussive syndrome, the John Doe family struggled considerably to adjust to Mr. Doe’s cognitive and physical losses. Although Mr. and Mrs. Doe gradually progressed in accepting this profound loss, their children continued to experience substantial difficulty. Additionally, the parents firmly believed that their children would not thrive in a traditional clinical environment.
Therefore, we creatively developed the John Doe Family Camp. Over a series of four weeks, we carefully designed and implemented a nature-based program that actively aimed to foster a stronger sense of family unity, enhance better identification of emotions, and provide consistent practice with expressive skills.
For me personally, this initiative represented a complete experiment. Nevertheless, the family expressed deep gratitude for the transformative experience and the meaningful growth they achieved together. Most importantly, it powerfully whetted my appetite for conducting even more therapy in natural settings.
